Seunghwui Koo

Seunghwui Koo creates her works drawing inspiration from the daily happenings and intricate moments of her life in NYC. Her work is a commentary on the lives of New Yorkers as she has witnessed.  She was born in South Korea, where she first had the idea of combining the pig’s head and human body. The significance of the pig’s head lies in the different symbolic meanings from the Eastern and Western cultures. Good fortune (Eastern) and greed (Western), two very different connotations of the pig, are themes that are a part of her works. She uses resin, acrylic, plaster, clay, and mixed media to create her works.

People #Black & White

Porcelain, ceramic on wood panel, 48 x 72 x 4 inches This work expresses the social harmony of Yin-Yang, through black and white colors and contrasting surface. Yin-yang is the perfect total of both parts, where one is essential to the other in creating harmony. The black artwork protrudes from the surface of the artwork, while the white artwork recedes from the surface of the artwork. "I used contrasting surface and color as my technique to represent the yin and yang," - states Seungghwui Koo

Blue Moon

Wall sculpture, installation. Porcelain on wood panel. In Korean culture, the moon is a beacon of hope and wish. Blue Moon is a very rare moon. It is very difficult for people to achieve their wishes and goals, like seeing a blue moon. There is a phrase, "once in a blue moon", which underlines this. In the process, many people can become tired, struggle, and live a hard life. All of the pigs are hand-made out of ceramic.
